introduction to letterpress instructed at north bay letterpress arts
sometimes the group is just too good & there is no sticking to the script. we were: one graphic designer + one yarn shop keeper + one mathematician + myself, taking turns to talk as we picked up the little lead letters…
instruction as communication as alchemy
yesterday’s letterpress workshop included deep discussions about luscious ink coverage, the tactile nature of cotton paper and freshly sharpened cedar pencils, the mesmerizing effects of hot foil stamping, & somuchmore 🔮 our conversation was even sprinkled with a touch of jazz tunes✨
there was instruction, but it felt more like alchemy⚗️ there are remaining spots on the North Bay Letterpress Arts workshop calendar. i hope we make some magic together in 2023🪄
acme ink🕳️
the Acme ink we chose had a note that warned of its age (50+ years) but it printed beautifully, sinking into the pages as we passed them through the press
intro to intro
the intro to my intro to #letterpress #workshop is my favorite part of the day!
i set up a random phrase in multiple #typefaces (available from the extensive #woodtype collection at North Bay Letterpress Arts & on loan from Richard Burg) on the ostrander hand press, and let students take turns inking up the type and pulling their first prints.
today’s “october heat waves“ was fitting for the weather lately 🔥 and possibly a closing ceremony in anticipation of the cooler days ahead.
